Yucatan is Elsewhere: Drawing on Dedifferentiated Attention, 2016
Performance, workshop, text, mirrored glass
Performance/reading/workshop drawing on Robert Smithson’s notion of the “non-site” and the application of dedifferentiated attention. Presented with Shu Hung at Ontopo Tulum in March, 2016.
Smithson’s Incidents of Mirror-Travel in Yucatan provided a starting point to discuss and enact a group “drawing displacement.” Participants were asked to consider the play between topos and a-topos (non-place, non-site) as a model for artistic engagement, and to participate in a drawing session that explored Shodo-influenced breathing, meditation, and mark-making as a technique to promote access to a dedifferentiated experience of the site. A "displacement mirror" was sited in several locations throughout the four-day event to create focal points for drawing exercises.
