Sleep Space
was initiated to call attention to the way that public spaces function in an urban environment, specifically, in downtown New York. Many locations in this area are regularly used for shelter by the city's homeless population, yet this pattern of use is often erased by city cleanup crews who move "transients" along and tear down temporary structures. In the context of Sleep Space, these structures are celebrated for their transformative arrangement of space through tagging with the Sleep Space sticker and photographic documentation.
