In 1977 George Maciunas suggested that a Fluxus approach to sport would look something like John Cage's prepared piano. This comment got us thinking: what would an approach to athletics look like that abandons the goal of perfecting performance within a set of rules, and instead asks What if the rules were rewritten?
In the autumn of 2013, we welcomed a season of Play at Table of Contents with a community table tennis tournament. Sixteen teams from local organizations played on a faux-marble table I designed. The table featured hand-knit nets by Correll Correll, and an edition of paddles by Kimberly and Nancy Wu of Building Block.
