PLAY: A Community Ping Pong Tournament, 2013
Public event. Plywood and marble laminate table, vintage posts, hand-knit net, plywood and leather paddles.
In 1977 George Maciunas suggested that a Fluxus approach to sport would look something like John Cage's prepared piano. This comment got me thinking: what would an approach to athletics look like that abandons the goal of perfecting performance within a set of rules, and instead asks What if the rules could be rewritten?
In the autumn of 2013, a community table tennis tournament was held at Table of Contents to answer this question. Sixteen teams from local organizations played on a faux-marble table I designed. The table featured hand-knit nets by Correll Correll, and an edition of paddles by Kimberly and Nancy Wu of Building Block.
