Statement
My work engages with the notion of art as philosophy and the philosophy of art. Like Arthur Danto, I believe there is
a strong connection between the production of contemporary works of art and philosophy or interpretation of that art.
Contra Danto, I see the two as different registers of the same project—a creation of concepts, approaches to research
and analysis. My work is informed by and often engages with philosophical issues such as undecidability, the
construction of value, the notion of legacy, and the symbolic construction of space/place.
My interest in the abstract histories and qualities that inhabit particular spaces has, developed into an ongoing series
related to what I call “no-wheres.” These no-wheres are places that have been produced in a context that internally
dislocates their symbolic value from the physical sites they occupy—a faux Great Wall constructed in rural Germany,
or a complex of housing developments in the suburbs of Beijing that mimics the trappings of Orange County, California,
for example.
