| Beijing Backgrounds consists of a series of hand-screened tee shirts that are printed with fragments of photographs taken in specific locations around Beijing (each shirt required 32 individual screens). The prints have been applied to the shirts at actual size so that a person wearing the shirt in the right location will appear to blend into that location. The shirts therefore act as a kind of urban camouflage, allowing the wearer to fit into his/her environment like a piece of a puzzle. When not positioned at the point of origin, however, the image on each shirt appears disconnected and abstract. Removed from its original context, the shirt and wearer stand out from the background and appear out of place. A collaboration with Shu Hung. |
